While he has his appeal, Beto O’Rourke seems to be more of the same kind of centrist that has dominated the Democratic Party since at least the 1980s.

Will it nominate someone based on perceived electability, which is usually code for incremental policy ideas and a long political career, or a fresh-faced progressive reformer with big ideas?

The American left, using all the platforms available to it, will have to push back against the attacks that are sure to come against Sanders and other progressives in the race, whose coverage is likely to vary between slinging mud at them and ignoring them.

If the candidates and supporters can come up with a uniform platform and promise to vote for the leading progressive candidate in order to defeat centrist and right-wing candidates, that will be a real victory.

A 100% Just Green New Deal doesn’t just offer a blanket promise of good green jobs and training for everyone, it will ensure that jobs training programs and investments in job creation are targeted and available first to the communities that need them most.

Clearly, much of the Democratic Party’s momentum is now coming from the left. And many of the positions that the timeworn Democratic leadership has staked out are now being overrun.

The party’s centrist wing is terrified. The political enterprise they’ve spent their careers building runs counter to the big, universal redistributive policies being supported by the Democratic base.

The progressive populist insurgency in the Democratic Party has tasted frequent victories this primary season: for our struggle has only begun.
