The inequality gap on a planet growing more extreme.

Of the 34 supervisors in the Elkhart, Indiana, Police Department, 28 have been disciplined. Fifteen have been suspended. Seven have been involved in fatal shootings. Three have been convicted of criminal charges.

“Corrections officers are given great authority and power in our system because public safety depends on them doing their jobs well.”

“Congressman Stockman used his position to defraud charitable foundations to advance his political career and pay for personal expenses.”

On Friday, the Elkhart, Indiana, Police Department released a 30-second clip of two officers beating a man in custody. Now we have the full 30 minutes, ending with the man leaving the police station on a stretcher.

Several city officials used their official positions to enrich themselves by soliciting and accepting bribes from people seeking to do business in Crystal City, which is located 100 miles near San Antonio, TX.

From 2015 through 2017, James King used his position as a Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) program counselor at the VA to demand bribes from the owners of at least three separate schools in exchange for funds using the veterans’ federal benefits.

These attacks on sovereign nations are, without question, illegal, unjustifiable and a stain on America’s reputation. Is that who we are?

“No one wants corrupt officers in our police departments or on our streets.”

While the position that the United States and its allies take will be important, especially if they impose sanctions, the case is perhaps more interesting for what it says about the region’s growing rivalries.
