My year and welcome to it

Here are four (million) of my own takeaways from 2021, a classic hell-on-Earth year that, if worse weren’t potentially on the horizon, could perhaps be quickly forgotten.

Three reasons to be hopeful as a hard year comes to a close

The year to come could still see big changes for the better. Here’s how.

How awesome is ‘awesome’?

Will the U.S. military under Lloyd Austin's leadership recover its long-lost awesomeness?

Media forget Afghan plight as US sanctions drive mass famine risk

Afghan citizens have been plunged into a humanitarian crisis due in no small part to U.S. sanctions, but where is the outrage?

Internet security made insecure

The entire system has become nuts.  Let’s go back to using secret words and codes by email.  And if really necessary, voice verification.  But don’t continue to insist on cods by telephone.  It’s inefficient and ineffective.

Why activists need art to create social change

The authors of a new book on artistic activism discuss the importance of fighting on the terrain of popular culture to reach a mass audience.

A Christmas confession

The U.S. economy depends on consumers consuming and the earth depends on us not consuming.

Millennials and generational wealth

Various financial injustices are impacting our communities. Generational wealth is one of those particularly affecting Millennials.

How worker solidarity protects what’s left of the middle class

Union contracts provide decent wages and benefits along with safe working conditions, retirement security and a means for workers to stand up for themselves.

How the Native American population in the US increased 87% says more about whiteness...

Another way to describe this recent adoption of Native American identity is what I call “racial shifting.”
