Ilhan Omar’s decisive victory in Minnesota’s 5th District primary marks a significant win for progressive Democrats, countering a well-funded effort by pro-Israel groups to unseat her. Omar, who defeated former Minneapolis city councilmember Don Samuels by over 16,000 votes, effectively secured her reelection to Congress. This victory comes in the face of ongoing efforts by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) to target members of the progressive “Squad” for their support of a Gaza ceasefire and other key progressive policies.

Omar’s triumph is particularly notable given her previous close contest with Samuels in 2022, where she narrowly defeated him by just 2,500 votes. This year, however, Omar approached the race with a clear advantage, out-fundraising and outspending her opponent by significant margins. Omar’s campaign focused on a broad range of progressive issues, including universal school meals, student debt cancellation, climate action, and a just foreign policy.

Omar, a prominent member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, has been a vocal critic of Israel’s actions in Gaza, particularly in the aftermath of Hamas’s attack on Israel last year. Her call for a ceasefire and her stance against unconditional U.S. aid to Israel made her a target for AIPAC and other pro-Israel groups. These groups, including AIPAC’s super PAC, the United Democracy Project, have spent millions of dollars in recent election cycles to defeat progressive candidates who challenge the U.S.-Israel relationship.

Despite this, AIPAC chose not to heavily target Omar’s race this year, a decision that may have been influenced by their failed attempt to recruit a stronger challenger against her. Instead, the group focused its efforts on defeating other Squad members, including Rep. Cori Bush of Missouri and Rep. Jamaal Bowman of New York, in two of the most expensive congressional primaries in U.S. history. These efforts were part of a broader strategy by AIPAC to influence Democratic primaries, with the lobbying organization spending nearly $25 million on elections in 2024 alone.

Omar’s victory, therefore, represents more than just a personal triumph; it is a broader rebuke to the influence of special interest money in American politics. Joseph Geevarghese, executive director of Our Revolution—a progressive group that supported Omar’s campaign—hailed the win as “a powerful rebuke to the influence of corporate money in our democracy.” He emphasized that Omar’s commitment to bold, progressive policies resonates deeply with her constituents, and he urged the Democratic Party to take note. “To secure victories in 2024 and beyond, they must embrace the policies that truly address the struggles of working families and reject the influence of dark money that seeks to undermine our democracy,” Geevarghese said.

The primary race between Omar and Samuels was one of the most high-profile contests in Minnesota this year, drawing national attention due to the broader implications for the progressive movement. While Samuels attempted to paint Omar as divisive and out of touch with the district, voters ultimately reaffirmed their support for her platform. Omar centered her campaign not only on her foreign policy stance but also on domestic issues that resonate with her constituents, such as abortion rights, climate action, and local funding for Minnesota’s 5th District.

Samuels, who criticized Omar for her opposition to President Joe Biden’s bipartisan infrastructure law, failed to gain the traction he needed despite receiving a late boost in donations from pro-Israel donors. Omar addressed this potential vulnerability early in her campaign, airing a commercial featuring Biden praising her during a visit to Minnesota last year. This strategic move helped to neutralize attacks on her party loyalty and reinforced her image as a leader who delivers results for her district.

Omar’s resounding victory is also a significant moment for the broader progressive movement, which has faced setbacks in other parts of the country. Justice Democrats, a progressive advocacy group, acknowledged that the movement had “suffered immeasurable losses this cycle” but highlighted Omar’s win as evidence that their efforts are succeeding. “The backlash from monied corporate and right-wing interests proves not only are we succeeding, but our mandate to elect more Justice Democrats and take big money out of politics is abundantly clear,” the group stated.

Omar’s victory sends a strong message to the Democratic Party about the importance of embracing progressive policies and resisting the influence of corporate super PACs and lobbying groups. As the party prepares for the 2024 general election, the outcome of this primary could influence how Democrats strategize in other key races, particularly those involving progressive candidates.

Looking forward, Omar’s win underscores the resilience of the progressive movement in the face of concerted efforts to diminish its influence. Her success is a reminder that, despite the challenges posed by special interest money, grassroots support and a commitment to bold, progressive policies can still prevail in American politics.

As Omar herself stated after her victory was announced, “Tonight, special interests lost and our movement won.”
