Two roads diverge in a very dark wood: vengeance vs. stability

Behold Trump as fully sadistic,/ Damocles sword going ballistic.

Are today’s crises so archetypal –
To explain why the right’s suicidal?
Scare-mongering, fascist polemics,
Not the “deep state,” feed epidemics.

Unspeakable to call foes “vermin,”
An echo of the very worst German.
Inciters who talk “blood purity”
Delight in racial hostility.

Who but authoritarian haters
Align with violent agitators?
Any Trump “insurrectionist act”
Erupts into vengeful attack.

Contort each federal bureau
Into Trump’s twisted politburo;
Treat fed work staff as private slaves,
Coerced into MAGA knaves.

Can celebrated equal branches
Endure flagrant Trump avalanches?
If pulled off, this reign of terror
Scalds the Constitution’s derriere.

Brace for nightmare detention centers,
Sans due process, run by tormentors.
That blights immigration woes –
And turns newbies into life-long foes.

What ego drives this weird fascist
To bellow loudly at his brashest?
Behold Trump as fully sadistic,
Damocles sword going ballistic.

But why giveaway the horror show
Inviting a fatal election blow?
Doesn’t Trump’s cruel scorched-earth
Only serve his nomination berth?

Even a benighted autocrat
Would better code his coup d’état;
Boasting his vitriolic rampage
Keeps the crazies center stage.

What vile cynic pitches this vision
Except to spur greater division?
Why telegraph suicidal abuse –
The death march of a loser to lose?

For over a decade, Robert S. Becker's independent, rebel-rousing essays on politics and culture analyze overall trends, history, implications, messaging and frameworks. He has been published widely, aside from Nation of Change and RSN, with extensive credits from OpEdNews (as senior editor), Alternet, Salon, Truthdig, Smirking Chimp, Dandelion Salad, Beyond Chron, and the SF Chronicle. Educated at Rutgers College, N.J. (B.A. English) and U.C. Berkeley (Ph.D. English), Becker left university teaching (Northwestern, then U. Chicago) for business, founding SOTA Industries, a top American high end audio company he ran from '80 to '92. From '92-02, he was an anti-gravel mining activist while doing marketing, business and writing consulting. Since then, he seeks out insight, even wit in the shadows, without ideology or righteousness across the current mayhem of American politics.
