As of January 1, 2022, in New Hampshire, a ban will take place prohibiting abortions after 24 weeks of gestation, with the exception to the mother’s health.
Democrats have already drafted legislation seeking to repeal the new restrictions. Some also want to include the right to make reproductive medical decisions a constitutional right, reports AP.
This new law comes as many other states have made strict abortion laws as well resulting in the U.S. Supreme Court considering a case to federally tackle abortion rights.
The Family Life Protection Act will require an ultrasound for those wanting an abortion to verify gestational age.
According to Boston 25 News, a health care provider who violates this new law could face up to seven years in prison.
“To be clear, an abortion ban is dangerous. It’s the first abortion ban in modern New Hampshire history,” says Kayla Montgomery of Planned Parenthood of Northern New England.
