While transportation continues to be a top contributor to climate change, we need Congress to pass an infrastructure bill that requires automakers to manufacture electric cars, trucks and buses. The United States needs pollution-free vehicles to protect public health, while combating climate change.
In President Biden’s current infrastructure plan, $174 billion is allocated to electrify cars, transit & school buses, the federal fleet (including the USPS), and ports. The plan also “includes funding for 500,000 electric vehicle chargers, support for workers to shift to electric vehicle manufacturing, consumer incentives to make electric vehicles more affordable and accessible, and pollution-free school buses.”
But automakers continue to lobby President Biden’s team for the weakest and slowest commitment to 100 percent electric vehicles.
It’s time Congress makes firm commitments and landmark policies to have pollution-free transportation nationwide. To get us to this goal within the decade, tell Congress to make it a top priority and support a bold plan within the infrastructure bill that supports 100 percent electric vehicles by 2035.
