Inhumane, criminal: What the US Congress is refusing to do for desperate Americans

While Americans are suffering, these politicians in the Senate don’t lack for anything. In this Congress more than half of its members are millionaires.

Right now we in America have a Congress that is completely failing the American people in their great time of need. This nation is under attack by a deadly virus, nearly 13 million people are out of work, a growing number on the verge of starving, struggling to pay rent or mortgages, facing eviction. Thousands are being thrown into poverty and/or homelessness.

Developing a new stimulus program should be the Senate’s top priority and these senators should be working long hours to do just that. But nothing of the kind is happening and that development has been placed on the back burner.

While Americans are suffering, these politicians in the Senate don’t lack for anything. In this Congress more than half of its members are millionaires.

Check out this article which lists the current members of the United States Congress based on their wealth. It indicates that their median net worth is just over $1 million. Simply astounding.

While I assign the major blame for getting nothing done to the Republicans and, especially, Moscow Mitch McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, we can’t let Democrats get a free pass and declare them innocent of any blame.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should be shouting from the rooftops, calling Republicans spineless political cowards for how they are treating their fellow Americans; she is doing no such thing.

All we hear from her is a lot of silence. She has a bully pulpit that she can climb into any time she wants to, but she is not doing it

Remember the saying, “If you want to get something important done, the first thing to do is -START! Two main goals must be met. First, the people badly need that new stimulus and, secondly, the economy must be jump-started.

We are not talking rocket science here. Here’s what the members of both parties need to do: take off your Republican and Democrats hats. Then sit down, roll up your sleeves, and start earning your $175,000 annual salaries.

Before negotiations begin, think deeply about what you have to do for your country and its people. Think about the plethora of problems facing America and that your job, and the reason you were elected, is to solve them.

Don’t think that the members of the other party are your enemy, what good could possibly come of that? It will do nothing but continue to prolong the current standoff, the wall that’s been erected between the two parties will just be reinforced, and nothing of substance will get done. A top priority should be to work together for the good of your fellow Americans.

Think about the principles of ethics and morality, about humanity in general, and then about the responsibilities you have been given under the Constitution. Dismiss any concerns you may have about being reelected.

Then GO! Fast track a large stimulus for the American people and small businesses, but none for the fat cats or Corporate America. When Americans get this money they will, of course, spend it in many ways and this will boost the economy.

People will spend money at these small businesses and many will be able to hire workers again. Of course, we would need to see the vast majority of these people wear masks and social distance to a much greater extent to make these efforts successful.

If Biden and company use new thinking and new strategies, as they should manage the virus crisis in a professional way, then we could see a major turn-around and be well on the way to bringing Covid-19 under control.

This is what we need to see happen, but it will not be easy, not at all. Both parties should understand that creating this stimulus is extremely essential, it is not just something that should be done, it’s something that must be done.

It looks like something very promising is taking place in the Senate right now. I just watched a CNN report that showed a nonpartisan group of senators, led by Mitt Romney, talking about initiating a plan to develop a new $908 billion stimulus package.

I wish them luck and I hope they succeed to create this new stimulus, but there is one obstacle that stands in their way. And that’s Mitch McConnell, the master of obstruction.

The only way to get this despicable Majority Leader out of the way is for Democrats to win both Senate seats in Georgia in the Jan. 5 runoff election. Here is an important part of the formula for winning: have Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, and other prominent Democrats, blanket the state to turn out a monumental vote like never before.

Pour every available resource into the state. Convince Michael Bloomberg to spend millions upon millions on TV and radio ads. Knock on doors all over the state, mobilize the African American community into a giant army to win this battle to retake control of the Senate. If that is accomplished, a new stimulus will no longer be just a dream, it will become a reality.
