Enemies of the Constitution, dismantling our democracy: Trump, McConnell, Barr

Trump, Barr, and McConnell do their business as if the Constitution doesn’t even exist. They have no problem subverting the Rule of Law, it is no more than a hindrance to them. These three are, in fact, autocrats.

It’s not as if the demolition team of Trump, McConnell, and Barr have plans to try to dismantle our democracy. The fact is that they are already doing it right now, right before our eyes. Hardly a day goes by in which some part of their objective is advanced. And our democracy is reeling from these ongoing attacks.

Definition of democracy from Mirriam Webster: “government by the peoplerule of the majority.  a government in which the supreme power is vested in the people and exercised by them directly or indirectly through a system of representation usually involving periodically held free elections.”

The bold portions of the above paragraph may have been the case in the past, but they are not in the American of today. Our government, over a period of time, has usurped those powers, and now Donald and his political cohorts are making sure that it stays that way and even becomes more embedded in this country.

On issue after issue, such as Medicare For All, the vast majority of Americans are for it. But that doesn’t mean a thing as the Republicans who control the Senate and the White House refuse to even consider it. In fact, one of their prime objectives is to destroy Obamacare.

That’s not government by the people, that’s not the rule of the majority, that is a rogue government, with a rogue president, that does not adhere to the Constitution, but make their own rules as they see fit. That is totalitarianism.

From CNN: “In a shocking, extraordinary move a few months ago, initiated by AG William Barr, he ordered the prosecutors in the case against Roger Stone to have the sentence of Trump confidant Roger Stone significantly reduced. Thereafter, four of the prosecutors withdrew from the case.

Just recently Barr had Justice Dept. prosecutors drop the case of former Trump adviser Michael Flynn who had pleaded guilty to charges that he lied to the FBI about conversations he had with Russia’s ambassador to the US. This flagrant move on his part has rocked Washington. This was yet another Trump dictates that Barr carried out.

It’s clear the Justice Dept. has become a subsidiary of the White House. Barr waits for Trump to plan his department’s agenda, i.e., “things to do” and then Barr follows up as Trump has directed.

Barr was intent on totally discrediting the Mueller investigation in every way he could concoct and he was highly successful in making the issues of obstruction largely irrelevant. And it worked. beautifully. He is a master of manipulation and obstruction. And the Democrats have been letting him get by with his destructive agenda.

What Barr is currently doing in subverting the law is nothing new. His has a history of doing the same dating back to the 1990s when he was previously Attorney General.

AG Barr, back in 1992 during the Iran-Contra investigations, used his illegal tactics as the then-Attorney General to bury evidence of George H. Bush’s involvement in that investigation. Because of what he did the esteemed writer, William Safire of the New York Times referred to him as “Cover up-General Barr.”

Then there was Barr’s involvement in the Iraqgate investigation in which Bush had sold WMDs to Saddam Hussein. Barr took charge of the situation and rejected the House Judiciary Committee’s request to name an independent counsel to investigate potential crimes by the Bush administration. Just one more of many Barr cover-ups.

Barr is nothing more than Trump’s lackey, his own special attorney who has turned the top law enforcement agency in this government into a tool of the president.

Trump, since he became president, has been on the attack against the FBI and various intelligence agencies, saying that they have been negligent in many ways, without any real evidence to support his accusations. He is intimidating the heads of these agencies to get them to act as he wants them to. He wants to control them.

Trump has stated that the Constitution says he has unlimited power. He had said that under Article Two, “I have the right to do whatever I want as president.” That could not be more wrong. We’ll soon see as the US Supreme Court has just taken up three cases challenging his statement of supreme power.

Article Two clearly indicates that he does not have supreme power and, therefore, the Court must adhere to what the Constitution states and it needs to rule against Trump. I think it will do what is right in this case and prevent this power grab by this president. If it bends to his will that will deal a fateful blow to our democracy.

If Trump loses in November does anyone want to bet that he won’t leave office, and the Justice Dept.and the Republican-controlled Senate, will fully back him? If he decides to do that who is going to stop him? Think about that because it may well happen and then our democracy will go on life support.

Trump has ended Congressional oversight, at least for now, as he successfully blocked numerous individuals who were associated with him in some way from testifying before House committees. And, for too long a time, the courts have not seen fit to stop him from doing so. And that is very scary, to say the least.

Now to McConnell. Before the impeachment vote, he proclaimed that all Republicans must vote no and that’s what every one of them did, except Sen. Mitt Romney. In the Senate, He puts a hold on all the legislation sent over from the Democratic House and will not let it come to a vote.

He did work with Democrats to produce legislation for funding the stimulus program relative to the coronavirus. He only did it because he knew he would be strongly castigated if he didn’t.

O’Connell, as the Senate majority leader, should be doing exactly that, leading the Senate to produce legislation to solve America’s problems and make progress. But he is not leading and, instead, acting as an obstructionist of the highest order.

He has blocked every attempt of the House and Senate Democrats to enact legislation to institute a new and effective system of universal background checks on gun purchases.

This small-minded man held up President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court for nearly a year, and it died. That is one of the worst acts of obstruction that has ever happened in Congress.

But it is what McConnell does, who he is. He even admits to deliberately doing these things. He has said: “That’s why I call myself the Grim Reaper,” he said during an appearance at a Kentucky political event. “I’m killing their socialist agenda.” That’s a political criminal doing a confessional.

Trump, Barr, and McConnell do their business as if the Constitution doesn’t even exist. They have no problem subverting the Rule of Law, it is no more than a hindrance to them. These three are, in fact, autocrats.

This is a deadly alliance that is, in fact, an enemy of the US Constitution which is the primary foundation of our country. It’s three members undermine it, go around it, and ignore its articles and provisions. They want to make it irrelevant, meaningless, and of no value.

This cannot, this must not go on, the deadly alliance must be stopped in its tracks. And it appears that the only way we have to do it is the November elections. That’s why we must soon see the greatest mobilization of voters in this country’s history to turn out and see to it that these three enemies of the Constitution no longer control our government and our country.
