While driving his department-issued vehicle under the influence of alcohol, Detroit Police Commander Johnny Thomas was recently arrested after crashing his vehicle into a pickup truck stopped at a red light. According to investigators, the police commander’s blood alcohol content was more than twice the legal limit.

Around 12:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, Thomas crashed his department-issued vehicle into the back of a silver Dodge Ram pickup truck that was waiting at a red light. The driver of the pickup truck sustained minor injuries and was treated at Detroit Medical Center’s Receiving Hospital.

After confiscating Thomas’ department-issued firearm which he had at the scene, police discovered that his BAC level was more than .18, which is considered “super drunk” in the state of Michigan.

“It’s troubling when any member violates the law, but what’s key is taking swift action,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig told Fox 2 Detroit. “When you’re at the rank of commander, you’re held to a very high standard at this police department, so accountability is critical for me.”

Chief Craig confirmed that Thomas has since been placed on restricted duty. The police commander has also been charged with operating while impaired and with possession of a firearm while under the influence.

Craig also noted that the officers who arrested Thomas are from the 3rd precinct, the same precinct that Thomas commands.

“He could be terminated certainly, he could be demoted, he could opt for retirement, the investigation is very early right now,” Chief Craig told reporters.
