Republican Sen. John McCain criticized Donald Trump’s remarks about media, saying dictators “get started by suppressing free press.”

He has been a frequent critic of the president since before Trump even entered the White House. He has been critical of foreign policy and national security under Trump.

McCain warns citizens to remember history and understand the intertwined connections between leaders and efforts to limit the media.

“They get started by suppressing free press, in other words, a consolidation of power – when you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press,” McCain said. “And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history.”
