On the Trump beat it’s difficult to get shots worth a damn. We’re kept in a cage (or as we call it in the press “jail”) while Trump speaks – so our only chance to get any shots other than the campaign approved angle is before he arrives.
For a photographer who rarely does interviews on the trail (audio at these things are a nightmare) portraits are what I find to be the easiest way to show the demographic of a particular campaign. Hillary supporters at the events that I’ve been to are older and white. Bernie supporters, younger and a mix. Trump – well, I’m sure you’ve seen his polling. It’s white men, white women and an unusual following of college age students. Trump-bros, as I call them.
The one thing that nearly all Trump supporters have in common beyond their demo is their love of showing off. They are PROUD of their candidate, unashamed and not embarrassed. They show this by their Trump schwag – t-shirts, buttons, hats – homemade or bought at one of the many tables outside of the arenas that he speaks at. So I ventured out of my prison at a Trump event in the Capitol of New York – Albany, to find the most interesting garbed Trumpers out there.
