A new poll from the Public Policy Institute of California shows an extremely close race.
According to the poll, Bernie Sanders trails Hillary Clinton by a mere 2 points, 46 percent to 44 percent, among registered Democrats and independents who said they were “likely Democratic voters.”
The new numbers are a statistical tie, as the margin of error is plus or minus 5.7 percentage points. The last poll, released in March, how Clinton ahead by 7 points, 48 percent to 41 percent.
552 voters were surveyed between May 13 and May 22 via landline and cell phone.
What’s more, Bernie is leading by a significant amount among young voters, ages 18 to 24. 66 percent of voters between these ages say they will vote for Bernie, whereas only 27 percent say they will vote for Clinton. Clinton leads in the 45 years and older category, with 59 percent of this age group pledging to vote for her and only 28 percent for Sanders.
The California primary will take place on June 7 and is semi-closed, meaning that independents and voters with “No Party Preference” can cross over and request a Democratic ballot.
