How do we get the media more focused on climate change?

Since I’m part of the Global Climate Strike (in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, although I’m a U.S. citizen), I want to do what I can to boost its success.  “If American journalism doesn’t get the climate story right—and soon—no other story will matter. The news media’s past climate failures can be redeemed only by an immediate shift to more high-profile, inclusive, and fearless coverage.” I got this quote through Nation of Change, which nge sent a letter to its subscribers saying, “The mainstream media has admitted that climate change headlines are “a ratings killer.”” So NOC asked its readers for donations to enable it to do a good job of covering the Global Climate Strike on September  20, 2019 and thereafter.

I sent Nation of Change an article for publication, asking why Bernie, Tulsi and Liz (among others) weren’t specifically coming out in favor of Global Climate Change.  But now I’m thinking: maybe they aren’t because they’re afraid the media won’t cover it?  Seems unlikely.  My prediction is that the media is going to cover an action that is supposed to take place in 450 locations in the U.S. and in 117 different countries.  In fact, my hope is that some or all of the presidential candidates will take part in a Strike.

I tried to think of something more I could do to boost the Strike.  So first I found the map of the Strike participants on www.globalclimatestrike.net .  I selected at random 30 of the Strike groups (they each had an email listed) and I sent out emails to them in groups of 10.  I wrote:

Hi, I’m a U.S. citizen who lives in San Miguel de Allende, MX.  I write articles for Nation of Change and L.A. Progressive.  I’m attaching an article that I’m sending to NOC.  I’m sure they’ll publish it by Tuesday.

I don’t understand why the progressive Democratic Presidential candidates aren’t coming out publicly in favor of the Global Climate Strike.  You can get my reasoning in the attached article.

I think it would help if all the local Strike groups would do the same as I’m doing (contact Bernie, Tulsi and Liz).  I don’t mind in the least giving the candidates a “heads up,” so I’m sending them copies of my email and article.  If you like my idea, you could send them copies and also send a copy of this email to some of the other Strike groups.  The email addresses can all be found on the map at globalclimatestrike.net.

Thanks a lot,

Michael T. Hertz

After I did that, I sent an email out to 350.org, the organizer of the Global Climate Strike.  They listed some of their officers’ emails.  I wrote:

I think it would help if all the local strike groups would do the same as I’m doing (contacting Bernie, Tulsi and Liz).  I’ve sent copies of this letter to these candidates whom I favor.  Maybe this will wake them up.  I’ve sent this same letter to about 30 local Strike groups in the U.S. to see if I can get some action from them.  However, I don’t have a good email list for them, but you do.  You could send a similar letter out to all of them.

Thanks a lot for considering this.,

We don’t have much time.  But my hope is that if the candidates start getting inundated with emails, they may decide to join the Global Climate Strike crowd.  Gee, and maybe those of you who read this article will, too.  I sincerely hope so.  If you’d like to write to the candidates, email them at info@berniesanders.com, bernie@bernie.org, info@tulsi2020.com, aloha@tulsiteam.com,  and info@elizabethwarren.com.   And if you need it, my previous article at Nation of Change here.
